If you are going to crib from another kaiju, crib from the best! Oh and then there’s this scene where the Minusaur goes all Shin Godzilla and fires beams from the spines on its back. Good composition to this shot with the kaiju looming large in the foreground while the more colorful mecha dominates the right hand side of the image and draws the eye. I like it, it’s very classically kaiju-feeling.Īnd here we see it squaring off with our mecha for the very first time. Now this nice low-angle shot gives us a feel for how big this thing is from the ground. Kind of reminds me of Black King or Grigio Bone from Ultraman R/B. I like the random blur spines and as I said, it has an Ultra Kaiju vibe.

When seen in full for the first time it is a very impressive design. We know there is a huge monster but keeping it in shadow and fog gives it a more menacing, mysterious look. This first shot of the Minusaur from episode 1 of Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger is pretty nice, very moody and atmospheric. Really looking forward to seeing where this is going. Also, she’s the one with the “Brute Strength” and that makes me happy.ħ) When do we get the small children and families dancing to that ED? Toei, you know we want it, give it to us!Ĩ) The memory eraser hammer had me laughing out loud!
She doesn’t get a ton to do in this first episode but what she does get to do, is impressive. It’s also very nice to see a mecha battle that isn’t just ‘stand there and shoot at the enemy before pulling out the final attack’. Whoever is the suit actor inside of that suit deserves some kind of award for that. I’ve never seen that kind of agile movement from a Sentai Robot before. Sure, there is the idea of these heroes being part (or descended from) an advanced human civilization that existed alongside the dinosaurs (ala Zyuranger) but the hidden village inside of a forest (freaking Aokigahara!) invisible to normal people gave me a serious Seijyuu Sentai Gingaman feel.Ģ) The Minusaur design was very cool, reminiscent of some recent Ultra Kaiju, which is a good thing to me.ģ) Wow, there was more death in this first episode than we have seen in a while in Super Sentai! It’s no first episode of Liveman mind you, but they waste no time giving you a feeling for stakes here.Ĥ) Ah, now I see where those scenes from Super Sentai Strongest Battle were leading!ĥ) The mecha fight was very well done. Just wanted to give a few quick things that ran through my head as I watched it.ġ) I was expecting a more Zyuranger or Kyoryuger vibe.
We get established backstory, a bit of lore, a taste of who our lead characters are and what the conflict is going to be over and an origin story for our villains (more on that in later posts). Great, great episode.Ok, strong first episode. I dunno if the finale can live up to this one. Did the writers all run out to see "My Hero Academia 2" together and get super-inspired by the what-if-we-gave-every-character-a-moment-to-shine thing? (Sorry, CosmoRaptor.) Really, most of the characters in this episode got a Moment of some sort, although not all the same size. The auxiliary Kishiryuu with actual personalities each got a little moment. Interesting that we got no credits sequence isn't that usually saved for the actual finale?Īnd unf, that finally assemblage. (Asuna may have been a relatively one-dimensional character, bu Osaki clearly has a bright future ahead of her.) Canalo's big moment actually felt earned, and Hyodo Katsumi showed he's better at drama than comedy. We got drama that actually had some narrative heft! Osaki Ichika absolutely slayed Asuna's big moment. The mecha moment at the beginning called back to the awesome mecha fight from the first episode, doing stuff we don't usually get to see. Patranger finale, which nearly excused all the blandness that had preceded it. That may have been the single strongest episode of Sentai I've seen it was absolutely top five.
